Yasushi Matsui (b. 1982, ¥@$©)

I, who love to draw and paint, was born in the United States and raised in Japan. Currently, I am based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where my dedication to drawing and painting continues to grow. I envision my art through various practices, including artmaking, live painting, murals, and illustration. My works have been exhibited in Northern California at venues such as Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose, CA (February 2020), The Epitome Gallery in Eureka, CA (March 2023), and TigerBunny Studio in San Francisco, CA (February 2025).

My art persuasion began to define its own line stroke and found my own form of drawing as “NoA-“, resembling a improvisational line drawing that is somewhat reminiscent of Japanese Calligraphy but also Graffiti. This exploration extended to my experimentation with unity between Painting and Sound through modern technology, known as “EToOto (Painting with Sound)”. After years of exploring the abstraction, I shifted to refine my traditional drawing and painting skills by sketching on scrap papers during my travel and daily life. I then began printing collections of these drawings using a home printer, akin to zine culture, which evolved into a project called “SKRAPS”.

I have also published a collection of time-lapse videos documenting the mural production process online. In addition to my silkscreen printing project called “PulluP”, which aim to upcycle used clothes by printing my original illustrations and designs, it has expanded to collaborate with YouthAbility Thrift store in Arcata to print on their donated second-hand clothing.

In addition to my traditional brushwork, I am deeply engaged in digital creation, including design, video production, and programing. Despite having no professional training and only a passion for music, I also produce beats and DJ with my collection of vinyl and tapes.
